Condition B: foxing, staining, minor creases and abrasions in margins; losses in corners; small creases and abrasions in margins; small strips of tape on verso in corner; hand-written inscription by the artist in pencil. Paper.
The inscription in the bottom left corner reads: "Dans la Fantasmagorie d'un rêve, je vis l'Amour sous deux formes," which is the title under which it was exhibited in Brussels in 1895, at the 3rd exhibition of Pour l'Art. The same nude characters appeared in two of de Feure's previous illustrations from Le Courrier Française in 1893. "In this variation on the theme of Sapphic seduction, divine retribution has been exacted on the female creature who bleeds profusely from wounds caused by having dared to enter the beam of celestial light" (De Feure p. 73).
